For years, I thought leadership meant being everything to everyone, saying yes, even when my heart whispered no. I softened my voice so others could feel comfortable and I shrank myself just enough to keep the peace. I believed pleasing people was the path to influence but I was extremely wrong. People-pleasing became the quiet habit that held me back. It blurred my voice, dimmed my confidence, and slowed my growth.
I remember when a colleague at work asked me to take on another project, I was already stretched thin, but I said yes because I wanted to be seen as somebody that was dependable. A week later, I was exhausted and frustrated, because my own priorities had suffered. That’s when I realized I wasn’t leading I was performing for approval.
So today, I say farewell to that habit. I no longer confuse agreement with leadership. True leadership isn’t about pleasing really it’s about having the courage to stand firm on your values, even when it’s uncomfortable.
You must remember, when you stop living for approval, something in you shifts; your voice gets stronger, your boundaries get clearer, and of course your impact gets deeper.
So farewell to people-pleasing and hello to authentic, unapologetic leadership.
