Because expeditions are brave, bold, curious, creative, ambitious, inspiring, raw and unpredictable. And driven by Explorers.
On a Women Emerging expedition, you explore how you lead.
Because we are convinced that there isn’t “an” approach to leading.
Leading is individual and personal.
It’s the inner self and the outside world shaping each other.
If you are on a trek, you don’t sit in a room and learn about the mountain. You prepare carefully at base camp and then you walk it. You feel the distance in your legs, the terrain under your feet, the weather on your skin. You learn about yourself and the mountain by moving forward.
A Women Emerging expedition works in the same way. You don’t study “how to be a leader”, you “explore leading”, you uncover what influences how you lead, you adjust your approach to the world around you and the task at hand and you figure out how to generate the Energy of leading.
You use the expedition methodology developed by women on the first expedition, and perfected on countless expeditions and speak to women the world over.
And you find your own approach to leading rooted in who you are – your Essence – and the context and culture you are leading in.

The 4Es, discovered during the first expedition and captured in Julia Middleton’s book
If That’s Leading, I’m In, acts as a map for Explorers.

Expeditions for a group of upto 24 Explorers, run over 5 months, with Explorers committing to 5 hours of exploring each month. Each group is formed around a community, geographical, or sectoral. Most expeditions are online, thought some groups meet at some points.
Online expedition for individual women anywhere in the world. Explorers can complete it at their own pace at zero cost.
Youth Expeditions are designed specifically for younger women, offering two tailored options:

Expeditions for students in higher education to explore their approach to leading. This is conducted virtually, for groups of students, across different geographies and education disciplines.
Expeditions run by women, in and for their cities.

As an Explorer, you complete expeditions, virtually, individually or in a group over a period of months, committing to upto5 hours of exploring each month. Using the 4Es methodology you reflect on your own approach, and you speak to other women on the expedition.
To help your exploring, you get access to Women Emerging audios, the WE Hub – our growing library of leadership intelligence generated by women, and you join a community with women leading across geographies, generations, abilities, aspirations, backgrounds and beliefs, sectors and specialisms.
And above all, you speak to Guides – women who are thoughtful about their leadership and generous with sharing their insights.
Guides meet with groups of Explorers, like you, to listen, challenge and encourage as they create a safe space for you to test ideas and reflect. They are CEOs, scientists, artists, activists, mothers, conservationists, changemakers, and more.
Some of our wonderful Guides are listed below, and there are many others that you will meet on your expedition.

As I did, you will catch yourself not being authentic, maybe even role-playing; you will find yourself confused as to why compassion and motherhood and spirituality are seen as feminine but not good enough for leading; there will be moments when you will exclaim aloud, to the chagrin of those around you, then smile radiantly, nod vigorously or shed a quiet tear at the insights that will confront you; you will suddenly see people around you in a new light and, with a gasp, you will realise that people you least expected, are actually leaders for who they are, as much as for what they do and how they do it. It is a very personal journey; after all, how you lead reveals who you are to others, but most importantly to yourself.
— Vidya Shah, Executive Chairperson, EdelGive Foundation, on her experience as an Explorer on the first expedition
My fear at the beginning, which dissipated rapidly, was that because the patriarchy had already defined the parameters of leading, we would find it impossible to deviate from them. We would not be motivated to delve into places of discomfort. Let’s face it, it is uncomfortable to have your alternative theory of change probed and poked at.
— S. Mona Sinha, Global Executive Director, Equality Now
This has been an extremely powerful and humbling experience, allowing me to deeply reflect on and reframe my role in leading, while building a meaningful community with an inspiring group of extraordinary women around the world, for which I am deeply thankful.
