An Interview With Ana Luz Porzecanski
We asked all of our Expedition members two questions as we reach the half way point in the virtual Expedition, to find an approach to Leadership that resonates with women. Here is what Ana, a Conservation Biologist, based in New York had to say…
1. Why is “an approach to leadership that resonates with women” needed?
Because too many women still feel that leadership is not for them. That they have to trade in their authenticity or shift their core priorities in order to lead. And this perpetuates exclusion (not just of women) and deprives us of the creativity, humility, insight, passion, and love that women can bring to our complex problems, and that are so sorely lacking in leadership. We have the resources to move towards a more equitable and sustainable world; we urgently need leaders willing to imagine and work for radically different futures. So we need an approach to leadership that resonates with and engages more women, and that makes it clear that this is a path we can take authentically, that we belong unconditionally, and that our aspirations and visions are what leadership is.
2. Halfway through the Expedition what are you uncovering?
By spending time in the company of the women of The Expedition and exploring together, I am uncovering new understandings of the role gender has played and continues to play in my life and in every aspect of society. I am discovering that we need to imagine different ways of relating to power, not as something to accumulate, or hoard, or wield - but as a resource we summon for transformation, a resource we use to question, to unlearn what does not serve us, to heal and bridge divides, to reimagine, to empower. And I am uncovering deep wells of inspiration!
