Growing up my understanding of a leader was one who had all the answers, took up space and was the loudest voice in the room! But my own journey has taught me that emotional intelligence is the key to being a good leader!

Empathy has helped me see whose voices are missing. Self-awareness has forced me to confront my own privilege and patterns. Deep listening has changed meetings from “updates” into spaces of truth-telling, vulnerability, meaningful collaboration and shared power. They are feminist tools for disrupting hierarchy, centering care, being anti-oppression and refusing dehumanizing ways of working.

Share a moment or practice that shaped your leadership.

When has empathy shifted a decision, you made as a leader?
How has self-awareness or listening changed the way you show up in power?

Aarushi, I used to have similar beliefs about what a leader should be. But when I actually became a leader, I turned out to be the opposite.

My natural style is to speak only when needed, listen more, and build a team that truly supports one another. There was a lot of pressure on me to change my leadership style, but I couldn’t — it wasn’t authentic to me. Instead, I chose to adapt the positive aspects: being more visible, networking, and building a strong support system.

Empathy played a major role too — it helped me increase my manager score almost tenfold, and it made me feel deeply connected with my team.

Well said Aarushi. Listening closely to the team has often changed the course of decisions, leading to better outcomes and stronger collaboration. Self-awareness helps recognize patterns and create space for others, making leadership less about authority and more about shared purpose.

I have read often about how you must learn to speak first at meetings to make your “presence felt” but I’ve now rejected this. I will speak but when I have my thoughts together and after giving others a chance to do so too. It’s shifted how I lead others.
